KLPVPA Professional Learning Plan 2013-14

Name:       Ron Sherman

School:     Winlaw Elementary

Year:          2013-14

Goal (worded as an action research question):

Domain:                Instructional Leadership

Standard:             #3;   Structures and Support

                          #3;   Clarifying Purpose

                           #3;   Supervision for Learning

Objectives:

1.     Encourage collaborative staff teams to engage in an inquiry model based on data/evidence that promotes student engagement and learning.

2.     Promote reflection and dialogue about effective teaching practices.

3.     Ensure that systems are in place to access and analyze data.

4.     Involve teachers in data collection, analysis, and dialogue about student learning and instruction.

5.     Ensure Teaching and Learning Conversations occur on a regular and ongoing basis.

Rationale:

In August of 2013, I completed the new BCPVPA Leadership Standards Self-Assessment Tool (Antosz & Boyd) to help identify the domain, standards and actions I should focus on to improve my effectiveness as a leader. Domain #2, Instructional Leadership, was identified as the one I should continue developing in the coming school year.

Resources:

I am committed to learning from and with my colleagues, and regularly seek out opportunities to share and learn with them. To this end, I am currently a member of a Principals’ study group and a self-created PLC of district principals working to deepen our practice. I have also taken on the role of Professional Development chair for our local Principals’ group, which will further develop my understanding of this work and create new connections with colleagues.

I remain connected with an online community of learners who regularly share their thoughts and ideas.  At present (September 2013) I have over 1800 followers on Twitter, and have had over 3500 hits on my blog. Each day I connect with these colleagues and share ideas to improve practice.

Demonstration of learning/ sharing what you have learned and whether you have achieved your identified goal

At our regularly scheduled PVP meetings, I will share excerpts from our learning journey with colleagues. I will also share with members of our PLC at our monthly meeting.  As a regular blogger and tweeter, I will also share my successes and challenges with my broader online audience, soliciting feedback and engaging discussion. Finally, I will attempt to present to a broader community through a journal submission given the time and data to support my conclusions.
